MARKET UPDATE: MYANMAR’S IMPROVING GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT & DECLINING INFLATION RESULTING IN HIGH RICE EXPORTS

Over the recent years, Myanmar’s economy has greatly diversified since its transition from military rule to democracy in 2011. On the back of a strong agriculture sector, export growth and a robust private consumption, the World Bank in its Myanmar Economic Monitor has reported that the country in the 2017-18 fiscal year has experienced a broad-based increase in its real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth to 6.4%. The country’s growth is projected to further increase to 6.8% in 2018-19.

The country’s inflation has also declined year by year, from 7% in 2016-17 to 5.5% in 2017-18. The World Bank expects it to further ease to 4.9% this year. This has resulted in record high rice exports. Accounting for 26% of GDP, Myanmar’s agricultural output is estimated to rise 2.5% in this fiscal year due also to favorable weather conditions and an increase in external demand.

The World Bank has suggested the implementation of the cogent new Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP), a draft of which is currently being reviewed by the Government. Encompassing five goals, 28 strategies and 238 action plans, the MSDP will align with the United Nation’ Sustainable Development Goals, the 12 Point Economic Policy of the Union of Myanmar and ASEAN Economic Community. The goals include economic stability as well as job creation and private sector-led growth.

The above developments and prospects for Myanmar’s economy presents numerous opportunities for those looking to do business or invest in the country’s growing agriculture sector. The upcoming AGRIMYANMAR 2018 Expo will provide a one-stop destination for companies and entrepreneurs to capture the vast opportunities available in the industry.

Expected to attract an attendance of more than 6,000 trade visitors, the three-day event is an ideal platform to source for new distributors, agents, and strategic partners, conduct market feasibility studies, maintain relationships with key clients and the building of new partnerships with foreign partners.
